The use of drugs to enhance athletic performance dates back to ancient times, when Greek wrestlers ate large amounts of lamb to increase their strength, Scandinavian knights ate mushrooms to induce a psychotic state, and long-distance runners ate sesame seeds to boost their endurance. The term "doping" was first used in the late 19th century to refer to a combination of opium, which was used by horse racers to increase their performance. In 1865, the use of stimulants by athletes during competitions was officially documented, and in 1869, cyclists were found to be taking a heroin-cocaine mixture known as "speedball". After August 1935, a description of his procedure and the structure of testosterone was published in the Journal of Physiological Chemistry.

A little later is the announcement in the Swiss Journal of Chemical that Yugoslavian chemist Leopold Ruzicka, who worked at Ciba in Zurich, had been granted a patent for his method of producing testosterone from cholesterol. In 1939, Ruzicka and Butenant were awarded the Nobel Prize for their contributions to science. Many testosterone formulations entered clinical use throughout the course of the following two years. It quickly became apparent that the acquired substance (substance) cannot be taken orally in its pure form due to its oily nature, which makes it poorly soluble in water.For this reason, testosterone propionate (a testosterone ester of propionic acid) was gradually created and administered into the blood.
The resulting medication has gained the most popularity in medical practice, and injections of it had a significant impact on restoring the two key aspects of a man: vitality and sexual drive.

In the 1940s, it is said that the Soviet Union and other nations, including East Germany, were the first to investigate the use of testosterone to enhance physical performance.

Steroids were not outlawed by regulatory organizations for a very long period, despite the existence of proof of harmful side effects. Not until 1976 did the IOC forbid them.

The increased growth of muscular tissue is the main cause of the anabolic effect.
As practically all anabolic steroids have a strong androgenic effect, scientists have not been able to create testosterone derivatives, which would promote tissue growth and prevent the development of secondary sexual traits.
